From Roots to Radiance: Adrien Coelho on Hair Lumière and the Evolution of Coelho Beauty

Two years ago, Adrien Coelho, founder and CEO of Coelho Beauty was the very first voice to open the pages of Future of Skincare. We spoke of roots, both literal and metaphorical. Scalp health, balance, and the quiet power of creating from a place of care and intention. His first collection was an exploration of the fundamentals: a reminder that true transformation often starts at the source, where beauty is less about the surface and more about what lies beneath.
Today, as Future of Skincare marks its second anniversary, it feels natural to return to this conversation. Adrien’s perspective remains singular in the haircare world, considered, precise, quietly authoritative. And the timing feels right: Hair Lumière, the latest chapter in the Coelho Beauty story, has just launched.
Hair Lumière is composed of three products: an Intense Treatment Shampoo, an Intense Mask, and a daily leave-in styling care, the Multi- Moody Fluid. Together, they form a sensorial ritual designed to restore hair’s glow, hydration, and freedom of movement.
With Hair Lumière, Adrien shifts the focus from roots to radiance. This new collection moves beyond repair, exploring light, movement, and texture, how hair catches and reflects energy, and how the right formula can bring it to life without ever weighing it down. Adrien speaks of hair as a living fabric, shaped by its own elasticity, tension, and memory. He speaks of the science, peptides, phospholipids, plant extracts, and of the delicate balance between technical performance and sensorial pleasure.
In this new interview, Adrien Coelho shares the thinking behind Hair Lumière, the science, the sensory experience, and the subtle shift in perspective that defines this new chapter.
Your new collection is called Hair Lumière, a luminous rebirth for hair. What inspired this idea of light and radiance? What does “light” mean to you, beyond shine?
To me, light is far more than shine. It’s a symbol of clarity, of renewal. A soft energy that awakens the material, gives depth to texture and movement to matter. The intuition behind Hair Lumière came from the way skin, when well-nourished and hydrated, reflects light and reveals what we call a glow. I wanted to translate that to hair — a perfect balance between hydration and nutrition that allows each fiber to catch and reflect its own light. After working in-depth on the scalp and roots with Hair Booster, I wanted to explore this next phase: when the hair regains its fluidity, softness, and inner light. The idea also came to me in the studio, watching how hair interacts with spotlights. Light is emotional. It reflects well-being, confidence, vitality.
Who did you have in mind when creating Hair Lumière? What hair needs or concerns were you aiming to address?
I was thinking of all those whose hair feels tired — dry, dull, weighed down by urban life. Whether it’s city stress, aggressive routines, or simply time. Hair Lumière is for textures that need softness and care, but without heaviness. It’s a fine, elegant response that restores movement without overloading. The collection is designed for all textures, all rhythms, without distinction. I’m fortunate to test my formulas directly on my clients — with a wide variety of hair types. Hair Lumière was also created for them: a way to extend the salon experience at home, with effortless, professional, sensorial results.
Let’s talk formulas: peptides, phospholipids, plant-based extracts… Why these ingredients, and how do they work together to restore and nourish the hair?
Each formula is a conversation between science and nature. Peptides act as repair messengers, helping to rebuild the fiber from within. Phospholipids mimic the hair’s natural barrier to restore suppleness and lock in moisture. To that, we’ve added extracts like pomegranate and aloe vera, known for their antioxidant and soothing benefits, along with plant oils selected for their affinity with the scalp. Together, these ingredients create sensorial textures that don’t coat the hair — they transform it, deeply and gently.
When you think of hair as a material — its texture, the way it reflects light, the way it moves — how does that influence how you formulate?
I see hair as a living fabric. It has tension, elasticity, movement. I observe how it reacts to air, light, and gesture. My goal is never to force it or constrain it, but to reveal its true nature. That’s why our formulas are always lightweight, fluid, never greasy or heavy. I want to enhance the natural beauty of the fiber, without altering its identity — to restore its freedom.
Your philosophy has always embraced holistic beauty — caring for the whole person, not just the hair. How does Hair Lumière reflect that?
Holistic beauty is something you feel. Hair Lumière fully embraces this approach by offering a ritual that works on both the fiber and the emotional state. Essential oils were chosen for their ability to create a sensory bubble, to recenter. Applying the mask or the fluid becomes a moment for yourself — a gesture that nurtures both hair and inner balance. It’s an invitation to bring light back into your everyday life.
Your first collection focused on scalp health and the roots of hair wellness. Hair Lumière feels like a more sensorial, expressive chapter. How do you see the link between these two collections?
They are two chapters of the same story. Hair Booster rebuilds, purifies, rebalances. Hair Lumière expresses, celebrates, enhances. The first is foundational; the second is emotional.
Also, most people don’t really distinguish between hydration and nutrition — and I believe having the right balance of both is essential. That’s what we’ve formulated here. Together, they form a complete cycle — like a breath between grounding and elevation. First, we care for the scalp. Then we illuminate the beauty of the fiber.
If someone wanted to integrate Hair Lumière into their routine alongside your first range, what would you recommend? Are there any favorite rituals or combinations you love?
I love pairing the Hair Booster Micellar Cleanser with the Hair Lumière Intense Mask — it’s the perfect duo for a deep, gentle reset. You can also do a double shampoo: first the Micellar Cleanser to purify, then the Nourishing Shampoo to hydrate and smooth. On a daily basis, the Multi-Moody Fluid works beautifully with the Memory Mist — one hydrates and disciplines, the other refreshes and extends styling. The two collections complement each other. I suggest alternating depending on the season, the state of your scalp, or simply your mood. Haircare should follow your instinct.
Haircare is full of myths. What’s one misconception you’d love to see disappear?
There are many, but one that comes up often is that clean hair should “squeak” or feel stripped. Not at all. Real cleanliness means balance. A healthy scalp regulates itself naturally. Over-washing or using harsh formulas only disrupts that balance. I always say: treat your scalp like your face. With care, consistency, and respect.
Every collection carries a certain energy. If Hair Lumière were a piece of music, a painting, or a film, what would it be — and why?
I think of Clair de Lune by Debussy — a soft, suspended, enveloping light. Or a scene from In the Mood for Love by Wong Kar-wai, where light drifts across gestures, silence, and emotion. There’s also something of rebirth in it — a fragile beauty that becomes luminous. Hair Lumière has a cinematic quality. It’s intimate, poetic, never flashy — but unforgettable.
Beyond hair, what’s inspiring you right now — any artists, designers, or cultural shifts shaping your vision?
I’m deeply inspired by the return of touch, of texture — in a world oversaturated with digital. There’s a growing need for real, physical sensations. In design, I admire Sabine Marcelis and her remarkable play with light and color, and the minimalist poetry of John Pawson. In music, I gravitate toward ambient textures. In photography, I always come back to natural light. This longing for softness, intimacy, and presence also guides the way I formulate.
Just for fun — what’s a skincare product or ingredient you’re obsessed with right now? Something outside hair that’s sparked your curiosity?
Right now, I’m intrigued by ectoine — a molecule that protects the skin from environmental stress. It acts like an intelligent shield, subtly but effectively. I’m drawn to invisible skincare that works deeply but leaves only a delicate, almost emotional sensation. I’ve recently fallen for Mimétique, the daily SPF by Aime Skincare, and the supplements by Combeau.
